Konkana: Lucky by choice

I am very excited and honoured,” says a very happy Konkona Sen Sharma.

The actress has won her second National Award for the best supporting actress, for the film Omkara. Earlier she had won the National Award in the same category for the film Life in a... Metro.

“It is a great feeling to be acknowledged for the work you do. But honestly, I never wait for the acknowledgments. If they have to come my way, then they will. I just keep on doing my work,” she says. Konkona has never felt the pressure of performing in a certain way and doing certain kind of cinema even after the accolades. “I have never felt the pressure. I only do movies that I want to do and the directors that I want to work with. And trust me, I ‘looove’ the movies I have done so far.”

Omkara was an interesting experience for Konkona. “I am just about comfortable with Hindi and in this movie, I had to have a UP accent. Vishal gave me a CD of dialogues and I crammed up everything. But then, Vishal noticed that this was coming in the way of my performance. So he asked me to be myself. He said, ‘try and get into the soul of the character.’ That helped and here I am with a National Award!”

Konkona has an array of films, which will release over this year and the next. “There is Zoya Akhtar’s Lucky By Chance, Dil Kabaddi, Sunglass and a very interesting movie about President Bush coming to India, titled The President Is Coming. I am very happy with the type of roles I am being offered.” And that keeps her busy? “If I don’t have much to do, I feel very useless. I would rather be in the working mode. Anyway, I am not the bungee jumping kind, I like to travel and read books if I have the time,” she laughs.
