On the sets of EMI, where he plays Sattar Bhai, a Muslim, Sanju Baba was required to shoot a scene offering namaz. To the surprise of all, the actor slipped into character easily and actually offered namaaz. A unit member said, “He did the vazu (the ritual of washing before the namaaz), then went down on the jaa-namaaz (prayer mat) and said his prayers so very naturally.”
Dutt, himself, was nonchalant about him knowing how to offer namaaz. He learned how to do so as a child from his mother Nargis, who was a Muslim; just as he was taught the Hanuman Chalisa by father Sunil Dutt, a Punjabi. And, since the actor studied at Lawrence School in Sanawar, he knows Catholic prayers as well! “I believe in God and I recite prayers of various religions. I’ve also read many religious books and they only tell you to be a good human being and to be thankful to God,” Dutt told BT.
